The far right (Andy Heasman, Ross Lahive and their crew) are travelling around the Island on their boat, leafletting and harassing library staff for displaying books on the LGBTQIA+ community. Apparently they are all for freedom of speech, unless minority communities want to speak.
As we know, Ireland has been terrible for its' sex education, that is why books teaching teens about sex education, are on display. It should not be viewed as something disgusting, but a normal process of growing up.
Library staff do not deserve to be harassed during their job by known thugs who seem to have nothing better to do.
The far right have visited Limerick, Longford, Roscommon and Athlone (luckily the library was closed) and other places. We do not want them anywhere else, especially not in Mullingar.
Keep an eye on the Mullingar 4 All, Ireland against Fascism, Limerick against Fascism, Queer Library Alliance pages, for up to date information and the whereabouts of the far right.
- If you have any information, please make sure to contact our page
- Please contact library staff in Mullingar to give them a heads up
- If they do visit Mullingar and you want to counter protest, please do so in a peaceful manner, for your own safety. (We have seen many innocent activists get physically assaulted at rallies in Dublin and we don't want this happening here)
- Bring flags and placards supporting LGBTQIA+ rights and library staff
- Gather in a circle or try block the far right from coming into the library, if they start to get violent, please do move for your own safety
- If they are violently aggressive, you may not have a choice but to get the Gardaí involved (although be cautious, as the gardaí have not protected library staff in the past)
- Protect yourself, maybe wear a mask, the far right are known to shove their phones in peoples' faces, as part of their live stream
- Bin any material that is handed to you from them e.g. Leaflets
- Shout some supportive chants and drown out their sound
- Join the Queer Library Alliance, they have meetings and perhaps will inform you on how to be allies to library staff (@QLAIreland on Twitter)
- Make sure misinformation does not spread, check library closing times, the far right have posted pictures claiming they "achieved their goal and closed the library" aka their harassment campaign has won... when in reality the library was already closed and not because of them.
Be careful out there!!
The far right seem to come out during the day time, so it is understandable that people may not be able to come out and support because they are in work (myself included), however every little helps.
