Mullingar 4 All is concerned about the rise of anti-immigration sentiments rising in Mullingar & surrounding areas in Westmeath. In Coole, protesters have taken it upon themselves to take documents from international protection applicants, which were posted online and amplified by Senator Sharon Keogan. It was rumoured that a family were given a free house in Westmeath, this was later debunked as misinformation by The Journal.
We have seen in Dublin and Connemara that many places that were to be used to house asylum seekers and Irish homeless families have been burned to the ground. The far right have shown repeatedly that they don’t care about this country and would rather burn it to the ground instead of living in harmony with people from different countries who have fled war and persecution. A recent video was shared online about the barracks in Mullingar, which will be used to house Ukrainian Refugees and other Refugees, followed by comments encouraging people to burn the barracks. This is quite concerning.
Mullingar 4 All fights for an equal society and diversity and believe refugees bring joy to the community. We have enjoyed their company at our protests for Palestine and have enjoyed reading about everything they have done for the local community. Everyone has the legal right to seek international protection, and we must do our best to make them feel welcomed here. Be wary of politicians only jumping on the anti-immigration bandwagon as they eye up votes also. Join us on Sunday, for our protest for Palestine where we will also gathering in solidarity with refugees in Mullingar.
